Prospective lab members may join the SAVE Lab through different research assistant roles depending on their previous experience and training. Research Assistant 1 is for individuals who are newer to research or have little to no previous research experience, while Research Assistant 2 is for those with more developed research skills or prior lab experience.
Before being considered for honours thesis or independent research project supervision, lab members are generally expected to spend time in the lab as research assistants. This allows them to build foundational knowledge in forensic and clinical psychology, receive training in the lab’s research methods, develop working relationships with members of the team, and identify a strong mentorship and supervision fit for a more independent research project.
Graduate Research Assistant opportunities are intended for students pursuing graduate-level training who are interested in contributing to research in forensic and clinical psychology. These roles provide opportunities to further develop research skills, gain specialized content knowledge, collaborate on ongoing projects, and contribute to research dissemination activities.
Students interested in pursuing MA/PhD training with the SAVE Lab are encouraged to develop a strong foundation in research methods, familiarity with the lab’s areas of study, and experiences that demonstrate readiness for graduate-level research and clinical training.
Undergraduate Opportunities
RESEARCH ASSISTANT 1 →
Description of Role
Research Assistant 1 may be a good fit for individuals who are newer to research or have little to no previous research experience. RA1s receive training in foundational research skills while contributing to ongoing projects within the lab.
Responsibilities
- Assist with literature reviews and article summaries
- Support data entry, organization, and management
- Attend lab meetings and training activities
- Contribute to administrative and project-related tasks
- Develop foundational research and professional skills
RESEARCH ASSISTANT 2 →
Description of Role
Research Assistant 2 may be a good fit for individuals with previous research experience or readiness for more advanced responsibilities. RA2s take a more active role in ongoing projects and contribute to research activities with increasing independence.
Responsibilities
- Assist with data coding and extractionSupport data analysis and interpretation
- Help prepare manuscripts, presentations, and reports
- Coordinate advanced project tasks
- Support newer lab members when appropriate
→ IRP/THESIS STUDENTS
Description of Role
Honours Thesis and IRP opportunities may be a good fit for current research assistants in the lab who are ready to take on a more independent research project after developing relevant experience, content knowledge, and mentorship fit.
Responsibilities
- Students in these roles take on leadership within a research project, with responsibilities varying depending on available opportunities, project needs, student interests, skills, and supervisory fit.

GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT
This role may be a good fit for graduate students who are interested in gaining additional research experience with the SAVE Lab outside of formal thesis or dissertation supervision. Responsibilities vary depending on project needs, student experience, and available funding.
